About me

I'm Richard Kerr-Phillips

I'm an evidence-led coach who still competes. I've spent twelve years coaching people — from their very first session to the international stage — and I bring the same method to everyone I work with: understand the person, build an intelligent plan, and adjust it as they progress.

Background

Study, sport and twelve years of coaching

My coaching is grounded in both study and sport. I hold an MSc in Sports, Exercise and Human Performance from the University of Münster, and a BCom from the University of Auckland. Over twelve years I've coached beginners, weight-loss clients and competitive lifters. Strength training plays a central role in how I coach weight loss, alongside practical nutrition guidance and sustainable habits.

I also build the tools I coach with. I developed GoodLift, the app I use to deliver your programme, track your training and make adjustments — so the coaching stays personal and organised week to week.

Still competing

I practise what I coach

I'm a two-time IPF World Bench Press competitor for New Zealand, a Commonwealth silver medallist, and in 2025 I took bronze at the Asia–Africa–Pacific Championships and first at the Oceania Championships. Competing keeps my coaching current and honest.

Patience is part of the method

Away from the gym, I once spent six months on a silent Buddhist retreat. I won't make too much of it here — but the patience and attention it taught me shape how I coach: steady progress, close attention to the person in front of me, and no rush to chase a number at the expense of doing things properly.
